DermaSwim is simple to use, but using it correctly makes a real difference in how well it works. The formula is specifically engineered for pool use, and the way you apply it, where you apply it, and when you apply it all affect how effective the barrier is during your swim.
This is everything you need to know to get the most out of DermaSwim every time you get in the pool.
Why timing is the most important part
DermaSwim is applied before swimming, that's the entire premise of the product.
Apply DermaSwim before entering the pool. The beeswax and coconut oil that form the core of the barrier bond with your skin's surface so the barrier holds through your session.
Apply DermaSwim while you're getting your goggles on, stretching, or getting your gear sorted. By the time you're ready to get in, the barrier is ready too.
Where to apply DermaSwim
Apply DermaSwim to any skin that will be in contact with pool water during your swim. For most swimmers, that means:
- Arms and shoulders
- Legs
- Torso and back
- Neck
- Face (optional, some swimmers prefer not to apply to the face)
Don't skip areas just because they seem less important. The back of the arms, the inner elbows, the backs of the knees, these areas are in continuous water contact during a lap swim and benefit from coverage.
If you're applying to the face, use a light touch around the eyes. The formula is external use only and should not contact eyes.
How much to use
DermaSwim isn't a thin serum, it's a lotion with a wax base, and you need enough to create a meaningful layer on the skin's surface. Too little and the coverage will be uneven. The right amount is enough to apply a visible, even layer across the skin.
Most swimmers use roughly a quarter-sized amount per major body area (arms, legs, torso). For a full-body application, an 8 oz tube provides a full swim season of regular use for most people. Apply generously but not excessively, you're looking for complete, even coverage, not a thick coating.
The pre-swim routine step by step
- Start with clean, dry skin. DermaSwim adheres most effectively to skin that hasn't been pre-wet. If you shower before swimming, let your skin dry before applying.
- Apply DermaSwim to all exposed skin. Work from top to bottom, neck and shoulders first, then arms, torso, and legs. Massage it in with even, thorough coverage.
- Do your pre-pool rinse. A brief rinse with fresh water before entering the pool pre-saturates your skin with clean water, which helps reduce how much chlorinated water it absorbs during your swim. DermaSwim has already set, the barrier holds through this rinse.
- Get in and swim. The protection is already there.
The post-swim routine
Pre-swim protection reduces what happens during the swim. Post-swim care supports recovery afterward. Both matter for the complete picture.
Rinse immediately after leaving the pool. Don't wait. The faster you rinse, the less time pool chemicals have to continue sitting on your skin after your session ends.
Shower with a gentle body wash. A mild, fragrance-free cleanser is preferable to strongly formulated soap. Clean thoroughly but gently, your skin has been through a pool session and doesn't need additional chemical stress.
Apply moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp. A fragrance-free moisturizer applied while skin still has some surface moisture helps lock in hydration and supports skin recovery.
Tips for different swimming contexts
Lap swimming at the gym: Apply before leaving the locker room.
Outdoor pool: Apply DermaSwim first, then apply water-resistant sunscreen on top. The two products address different things, chlorine and UV respectively. Neither replaces the other.
Hot tub or spa: DermaSwim also protects against bromine used in many hot tubs. Apply before soaking the same way you would before a pool session. Use caution when entering or exiting a hot tub after applying DermaSwim, as the lotion may make surfaces slippery.
Children: Apply to your child's skin the same way, before they get in. DO NOT carry children while you or they are using DermaSwim, as the lotion may make skin very slippery.
Competitive training: For swimmers in the pool 5 or 6 days a week, consistency is everything. A routine you do before every single practice, not just when you remember, produces meaningfully better results across a full season than an occasional application.
Storing DermaSwim
Store DermaSwim at room temperature. Avoid leaving it in a hot car or in direct sun for extended periods, high temperatures can affect the consistency of the wax-based formula. The pool bag is the ideal home for it during swim season.
